Q:
The following are responses to comments in the earlier post:
1. "I have not seen anything that specifically says that it is layer 3."
Here is a protocol map from Network Associates that distinctly and clearly shows ARP as a Layer 3 protocol, www. corrent.com/pdfs/OSI_ppin.pdf . There are several other very detailed protocol maps out there that show ARP in the Network
Layer, however, they are not free like this one. And yes some protocol maps show ARP incorrectly in Layer 2. But if you look
closely at those maps you'll notice that, usually, this is more so with more detailed maps, ARP and RARP are butted up
against the border of the dividing line between Layer 2 and Layer 3. Obviously, there was a bit of a debate that occured when
the map was made. Sort of like the one we are having now. Also, there is this site that presents ARP at the Network Layer,
www.networksorcery.com/enp/topic/ipsuite.htm. As I was perusing info tonite came across another page but this points
ARP at the Internet Layer of the DOD Model which translates to the network layer of the OSI model, homepages.uel.ac.
uk/u0214757/internet.html. I know it not a official protocol site but just thought I would throw it in there. I'm sure there are
many others out there, just really do not havve the time to look.
